JOHN OAKS

John’s interest in art began at the Woodward School in Brooklyn, NYC and at Saturday classes at Pratt Institute.  Decades later and after a career in science, studies with printmaker Larry Welo launched John’s interest in etching.   Upon retirement from the University of Wisconsin’s School of Veterinary Medicine, John partnered with Burt Wagner to open Crooked Line Etching Studio which houses John’s 105+ year old Kelter etching press. Most of John’s intaglio prints are made on that press using classic acid-etched copper plates.  Some pieces combine line etching with chin-collé, pochoir, pastel, water color or colored etching inks.  Recently, John has been combining etching with wood block printing, screen printing and photography.
